Drømmen: perfect for two!
21:09
For my birthday we visited three cabins on a two-night trip over the Canada Day long weekend. First up was Drømmen. I was so excited that I didn't care that the forecast was calling for 2.8mm of rain on our first day, 3.4mm rain on our second, and a whooping 12.6mm on the day we were packing out.
It only stopped raining just before we got off the bus and it had been raining all week so it wasn't a huge surprise that the trail was really muddy. But I remembered a bit too late into the hike that I needed to spray my hiking boots and went probably 4 or 5km with soaking wet feet (like, my socks might as well have been sponges). And after a week of rain, the mosquitoes were insane.
The trail passed by a supply drop off spot from WWII that had been manned by the Norwegian resistance group "lommedaltroppen" (Milorg Group 13313). From what I was able to gather, on February 22, 1944 a successful drop of 19 parachutes carrying two and a half tonnes of weapons and ammo had been made at that spot. The mosquitoes were so bad I could hardly stop to get a photo of the sign. Can't imagine being posted there during the war without at least a "bug jacket".
The last bit of the hike was not fun: we were tired, getting hungry, and the trail was steeper than we anticipated. Getting to the cabin was a huge relief. Outside was a huge swarm of mosquitoes but once inside, we found a that it had been recently renovated with new floors and a new roof.
We made a fire, put on dry socks, and sat down to eat with plans to visit the other nearby cabins in the coming days. Looking through the cabin log book it seems like this is a fairly popular spot and we heard from some friends that they had been a few weeks after us and seen our entry! Not hard to see why it's popular -- the location is great (save the mosquitoes) and the cabin is super cute, private and recently renovated (it's also accessible by a nearby road instead of the hiking trail).
More to come on the other cabins we visited in the following weeks!
